Join fun and festivities on September 11, 2010 as the city celebrates the 51st annual Wiener and Kraut Day, a community wide celebration of Waterloo’s heritage that includes music, food, family activities and a city-wide rummage sale. INCREDIBLE SURROUNDINGS Waterloo is surrounded by natural wonders, including marsh areas and woodlands perfect for nature walks and bird watching. Tucked away near the outskirts of the city you’ll find Garman’s Woods. The 40-acre plot is one of the highest points in the county and contains 22 ancient Native American burial mounds. The Waterloo Wildlife Area located one mile east of Waterloo has 6,179 acres of public hunting land. The principal wildlife of the area are: pheasants, rabbits, furbearers, squirrels, ducks, deer, turkeys, and sandhill cranes. HISTORIC SAMPLINGS Scenic beauty can also be found indoors. The Waterloo Antiques Mall is a renovated red brick warehouse that showcases an ever changing selection from more than 50 dealers. The 1930s-era Mode Theatre sits in the city’s center, combining activities for visitors and residents within its art deco architecture. Don’t forget to stop by the Waterloo Historical Museum, housed in a former church that dates back more than 100 years. Follow the country roads that surround Waterloo, and you’ll come across Island Church, a Wisconsin registered landmark built in 1863. Early settlers to this area from Bohemia and Germany called this St. Wenceslaus Church, after the king of Bohemia, and you can relive history on St. Wenceslaus Day, September 26, 2010, through an authentic Catholic mass in the tradition of the early 19th century and other historical activities on church grounds. ENJOY THE RIDE The Trek 100 Ride for Hope rides into the city on June 12, 2010, and it all starts at the bike maker’s headquarters in Waterloo. The Midwest Cycling Series is featured on June 23, 2010, hosted by Trek and city of Waterloo. The series brings a day full of high energy professional cycling races that are amazing to watch.
